Painting Knives & Spatulas: Tools for Texture and Expression
Painting knives and spatulas open up a range of techniques that brushes simply can't replicate. Used for impasto, colour mixing, scraping and building texture directly on the canvas, they give artists a more physical and expressive way to apply paint. DeSerres carries a selection of knives and spatulas suited to acrylic and oil painting, for every level of practice.
Knife or Spatula: What's the Difference?
Painting knives have a flexible, offset blade designed for applying and manipulating paint directly on the canvas. They come in a variety of shapes: diamond, trowel, straight, each producing a different mark. Spatulas have a stiffer, wider blade and are primarily used for mixing colours on the palette and cleaning surfaces. Both are essential tools for artists who work with thick paint or want to add texture and spontaneity to their work. Explore our full Brushes & Painting Tools collection for more studio essentials.
