Boîte de bois de 72 pastels à l'huile

These are the student-grade Mungyo pastels and not the professional Gallery line. I wish the site was a little bit more specific. The picture is oddly too small and low resolution to read the label on the box and nowhere does it say exactly which line of Mungyo these ones are. They're not terrible pastels exactly but they're not great either, they would be good for children maybe. Your first foray into the world of oil pastels shouldn't be these ones because it'll probably leave a bad impression; they're streaky, transparent, somewhat hard and not very pigmented. I guess you can use that to its benefit but you'd probably have to get quite experienced with oil pastels before you could do that.

I definitely didn't need 72 of them but the box was nice, however it's not real wood but plastic. Anyway so I gave these pastels away to the neighbor's kid and I use the box to store some of my better pastels, but I suppose you could store anything you want in it.

I mean it's fairly cheap, it was like $50 after taxes for 72 pastels, so if you want to introduce some kids to a fancier crayon these are a good choice, or if you want to discourage someone from working with oil pastels ever again you can give them this box as well, but other than that I fail to see a use for these in any reasonable application.

I feel like I was catfished, to be honest. I'm just not good with buying things online and it seemed like a hassle to return these so I begrudgingly had to make do. If I had known what I was buying, I would've probably been happier with like 6 or 7 Sennelier oil pastels instead, or a box of Sakuras. Any good artist will make do with whatever they have, sure, but why bother? It's much easier to buy something of good quality to take the guesswork out of the result and use it to its fullest potential.

I guess if I was trapped on a deserted island and had nothing to draw with but these particular pastels I wouldn't be so bitter about this whole experience, but I'm not stuck on a deserted island, I have a credit card and I can use it to buy better art supplies.

I didn't want to write this review and I figured I'd just quietly take a loss, but DeSerres sent me an email at 4am asking me to review this which woke me up so I'm just going to be honest. 1 star for the quantity of the pastels, 1 star for the box.
